Tesla Model Y Door Dent Repair

Using Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) To Remove a Door Dent in a Tesla Model Y

Recently, a customer brought two vehicles to us for dent repair. One of these vehicles was a 2023 Tesla Model Y with a dent on the rear door panel. The dent measured approximately 2 inches in size and was located along the body line in the center of the door.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

  • Inspection: I began by thoroughly inspecting the dent. I checked its size, depth, and whether there was access to the back of the damage. For the Model Y, it’s crucial to identify if the dent is in front of or behind an intrusion beam, as this will affect access. This assessment will help me establish the best approach for the repair.

  • Determine Repairability: During the inspection of the dent in this door, I determined that I would be able to gain access through the front wire harness opening. There would be good access to about 70% of the dent with a dent repair tool. The other 30% was behind the upper door brace. This limits what PDR tools can be used in this area, but I would still be able to thoroughly complete this Tesla Dent Repair.

Step 2: Preparing For Repair:

  • Heating the Panel: Repairing a dent in a Tesla door can be a time-consuming process, often requiring several hours to complete. The initial step involves using a heat gun to raise the temperature of the panel to an optimal range of 100-150 degrees Fahrenheit. This heating process is crucial, as it enhances the malleability of the aluminum, facilitating better manipulation of the metal.

Step 3: Perform The Repair:

  • Working With Damage To Bodyline: The location of the dent, situated directly in the center of the bodyline, adds complexity to the repair due to the depth of the damage.
  • Gentle Pressure: I utilized various paintless dent removal (PDR) tools to carefully work out the dents. Paying special attention to the deep damage to the body line. Gentle pressure is needed to bring up the bottom of the dent without causing any visible marks or changing the look of the paint finish.
  • Tapping Technique: One crucial aspect of this repair involved addressing the crown at the top of the dent, which had been created by the impact that pushed the metal upward, resulting in a raised bulge. To effectively reshape this bulge back into the original dent, I utilized a combination of specialized knockdown tools and hammers, ensuring that each application was executed with precision.

Step 4: Final Touches:

  • Smooth the Surface: After the dent is removed, I conduct a final inspection from different angles using my PDR Light to ensure the body lines are smooth and the surface is uniform.
  • Polish If Necessary: If there are any remaining minor imperfections, a light polish can be used to restore the shine without repainting.

Conclusion

Repairing a door dent on a Tesla Model Y using Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is an efficient technique that quickly brings the vehicle back to a condition similar to its original factory state. This method eliminates the need for conventional dent repair techniques, which often involve lengthy bodywork and painting processes.
